Compiled Trees Should Not Be Your Only Source

Compiled trees (regardless of the compiler or the book‚ site‚ etc.) should not be your only source for a fact‚ relationship‚ date of an event‚ etc. These trees can lead you to other sources and give you research ideas‚ but do not simply “copy it down because you saw it online.” At the best‚ compiled […]

Emigration vs Immigration

According to Wikipedia Emigration is the act and the phenomenon of leaving ones native country to settle abroad. It is the same as immigration but from the perspective of the country of origin.   Although human migration has existed for hundreds of thousands of years immigration in the modern sense refers to movement of people from one nation-state to another where they are not citizens.

Immigration records for major U.S. ports have been kept on a regular basis since 1820. These ports include: Boston New York Philadelphia Baltimore and New Orleans. Others such as Mobile and Galveston began keeping records later in the nineteenth century while western ports (San Francisco and Seattle) began in the last years of the 19th century.  Sometimes the ship arrival records youre hoping for just cant be found but hope is not lost!  Perhaps your ancestor left a trace on the other side of the ocean.  Our record search is not limited to one side of the ocean.

The majority of all incoming ship passenger lists for the United States for the years 1820-1957 as well as Canadian Passenger Lists 1865-1935 and Border Crossings 1895-1956 and UK Incoming Passenger Lists 1878-1960.   If your ancestor walked sailed or swam across…if their is a record of their crossing chances are good that we will find it.   Even when others have failed.  Our databases are extensive and many times we have the actual documents: naturalization papers ship records and more.
